Highest Annual Mileage Record (HAM’R)
:
This has been in the news as Kurt Seavogel has recently surpassed the Tommy Godwin (1939) record by cycling 76,076 miles (122,432 km) in a year. Some details here. Other riders that have attempted this record include Steven Abraham (Audax UK) and Miles Smith (Audax Vic). Miles plans another attempt later this year (more here).

But now another rider has entered the scene. Doing 360+ km rides daily, every day, in ~12 hr elapsed time for the past 30 days: Amanda Coker. She is currently well ahead of record pace. Links here, here and here.

Inspirational Ride Reports:

Spirited rides (or revisting the hierarchy of needs)
“…according to the theory, I should be working on Self-Actualization – … seeking personal growth and peak experiences. But this past weekend, I find myself once again returning to this sport and once again randonneurring takes me back to the basic needs.”

Auf Wiedersehen, Audax?
“Cycling is a great emptier of the mind, a means of silencing the endless internal chatter of daily life, of reducing existence to a few simple imperatives: eating, sleeping, keeping the pedals turning. Perhaps paradoxically, this emptiness, this focus on the purely mechanical, provides a blank canvas for lengthy, uninterrupted thought.”

Some time-wasting You-tube clips

Cycling can be fantastic, until it all goes wrong.
This is brilliant: “You can’t reverse that kind of crap” – take care.

The Secret Pro:

In the last newsletter the Secret Pro was: Mario Cipollini. I would have also accepted “Super Mario” or “The Lion King”. Winner: Rod Staines
cipollini_moschettieri

There were 3 correct entries: Peter Jenkins, Rod Staines and Alex Morgan. You will have to go back to Newsletter 12 April, 2016 to find details of my random selection “algorithm”.
Briefly, the 3rd page of “The Rider” starts: “I wipe my tires clean and get onto the bike.”; the 3rd word of the 3rd page is “my”, which has 2 letters, 2nd answerer wins.

The current IOU beer/coffee list: Wayne Williams 1; Rodney Clarke 2; Dino Morgante 1; Peter Jenkins 1; Rod Staines 1. You have to ride to collect. Hint: I will be at “The Goat Track Gambol” where you can collect your winnings before, during, or after the ride.

Only part of today’s Secret Pro is shown below. – Arguably the most famous chin-bum in cycling history.
