Newsletter: 10th January, 2017

The Christmas party did actually happen, for those that can remember back into last year. More below.

Ride News:

Eleven out of Eleven – 100k (BA) – (1/1/17)

A great way to punish the head for any New Year’s Eve excess.
And another great edition from Simon, who made just enough changes in the three+ pages of cue sheets to sow the seeds of doubt. However, it presented no problems for the 15 riders, despite the very hot conditions: David Booth, Raoul Dover, Nick Fisk, David Foster, Hugh Fyson, Peter Jamandijevic, Peter Jenkins, Vaughan Kippers, John McMullan, Peter Russi, Belinda Ward, Peter Watson, Peter Whyte, Lee Witzerman (15!), Paul Witzerman.

This ride always picks up a few people who have made New Year resolutions as well as its fair share of first-time riders. And as we all know, first time riders are always good for a ride report. Thank you David Foster.

River Loop January – 50k – (10/1/17)

There is a Tuesday River loop on every week (5:30 Regatta). The 1st Tuesday of the month is also a BA 50/100 brevet. (I nearly have enough weekly pictures for a time-lapse video.)

Late News

Audax Queensland End-Of-Year Party 2016

For those that missed it, Ant and family hosted a terrific Audax Christmas party
And just to be clear what we are talking about:

I took lots of photos, buts most were black against the outside light. These are the ones that worked:

And a few gems:

And the finale from George: Ready!

Online Permanent Registration Trial

Audax Australia is trialling an online registration system for permanents. It uses the online payment system we have been using for calendar rides but also provides electronic processing of brevets. Queensland has been doing limited trials and the system is now being expanded into other regions in a restricted manner to iron out any bugs before it is released Australia wide.

Registration Portal:

The rider has to get agreement from the Ride Organiser when they want to ride a permanent then they register online using the portal (up until the night before the ride). When a rider completes the registration they are emailed a PDF copy of the brevet that can be printed and used for the ride. On completion, scan or photograph the completed brevet and upload using the link provided in the registration email. You will be emailed a brevet number when processed by the Ride Organiser and Regional Brevet Secretary. Stickers will be sent periodically to affix to your brevet.

Not all permanents are in the system yet but there are some new ones. See on the web site: under Regions>Queensland>Permanents, or click here.

The New Year

I hope people are considering their Flèche Opperman options. The rules are simple: ride at least 360km in 24 hrs from 8am March 18th 2017. See past stories here. I have had a number of people looking for teams. Please send me an email if you are interested in joining a team or need more members ( I have also heard of a possible Oppy record attempt (Qld record – let’s be real).

Here’s a pretty good Oppy team:
And note it is considered good etiquette to wear tubulars when drinking “fuming” soup.

Audax Qld Film

A part of the Brisbane Bike Week, Space for Cycling is organising a bike film festival.

And they are organising “Brisbane Bike Bites” a 5 minute short film competition. Details are here. But all we really have to worry about is how we are going to spend the $200 prize money for our Audax entry.

Those who wish to star in this film please come to Bedrock this Saturday. It would help if you are old and gnarled to fit the script (such as it is). If you happen to be young and pretty, please do still come along, but try to stay at the back. See you there!

QLD Jersey

Hot off the press: The new Audax Qld short sleeve jersey.
The new long sleeve jersey.

They are definitely the kit to be seen out and about, and will be snapped up fast. If you are an Audax member you have the opportunity to purchase a jersey at a subsidized price. It would be well worth joining if you are not a member just for the jersey.

The Secret Pro:

Last weekmonth’s Secret Pros was: Andrew Bragg.
Peter Robertson was the only entrant, but I’m sure the pelvis was widely recognised by all.

The current IOU beer/coffee list: Dave Minter 4; Dino Morgante 1; Kym Raffelt 1; Peter Robertson 1; Rod Staines 1; Wayne Williams 1; Melvyn Yap 2. You have to ride to collect.

Today’s Secret Pro is shown below:

They used to carry him on ships as a navigation aid to determine the correct horizon. (Which you will note from the top-tube, is slightly different from the apparent horizon.)

Email answers to: The winner is drawn randomly from all correct answers sent in before the next newsletter.
