Newsletter: 4th April, 2017

“This is where we were supposed to have a beer with Mike to celebrate the end of his @indianpacificwheelrace mission.”

“Instead Kristof placed some flowers on the steps of the Opera House as a tribute, while the racers and a thousand supporters watched on in silence. Mike was one of those guys who made a million lives better. The huge crowds of people who showed up for tribute rides around the world is proof.” – Jesse Carlsson

Ride Reports:

The Indian Pacific Wheel Race (IPWR)

Mike Hall – riding past the Bright Brewery a few hours before his destination with death.

The IPWR race was called off within an hour of the incident. Most riders electing to stop, with some continuing to the end as a tour rather than a race.

People have been asked not to comment or draw conclusions before investigations have finished and a clearer picture of what happened is out.

However, it would be fair to say that endurance riding/racing and Audax riding are dangerous pastimes. It doesn’t matter how safe you are (Martin Pearson 2015), or how experienced you are (Jim Chant 2016), or how quiet the roads are (Micky Inagaki 2017), or how busy the roads are (Mike Hall 2017); a car/truck can very efficiently kill you.

Late News – Rothman’s Tour of South Queensland

This was a fairly high-ranking race to go by the prizes on offer:

Queensland Jerseys

Yes – they have arrived, and Peter Jenkins was seen handing them out at last weekend’s Yeronga Medley. In order to save postage and keep to the rock-bottom price, the “secret pro model” will be used to deliver the jerseys; in that “you have to ride to collect”.
