Yeronga Medley 3 – Saturday Aug 19th 2017

A strong turn-out at the peak of the SEQ riding season. But conditions conspired – as they usually do. Laura Diaz, Simon Faber, Tara Horner, Tracey Howley, John McMullan, Kylie Perry, Shawn Perry, Kym Raffelt, Melvyn Yap (110), Duncan McDonald, Vaughan Kippers, Peter Watson (200) Raoul Dover, Mark Riley (300), Jonny Ayres, Mark Harris, Brian Hornby, Anthony Richardson (400), Jeff Franklin, James Nitis (600): That’s 4990 Audax km ridden. The 600 riders both put in amazing rides.

I can do no better than Mark Harris’s FB summary:
Yeronga Medley 400 – I am happy to take photos all day long they tell the story. I did write a few words to supportive friends. As follows: I absolutely hate wind and I knew a day like this would come on a long ride and it did. So this was the ultimate personal challenge. In the weeks prior to the ride I had agreed to ride with Brian Hornby and Anthony Richardson because these guys have a wealth of Audax experience and knowledge that I could learn from. Due to the conditions it was critical to look out for each other and work together through the winds and into the night. We started at 6am and finished at 3am. From about 10pm to 3am it was extremely cold at 1 point my Garmin showed 1.0c and Brian’s 0.1c. Ant even stopped at the last control (servo) and bought a newspaper to put up the front of his jersey. Although I went prepared for the cold it was so much colder than I could have imagined (lesson learnt). Equipment went well and charging lights/Garmin went according to plan 🙂 The last few hours were a test of mind and body whilst suffering from the cold and fatigue. Brian’s Di2 went flat and had lost charge and rode single speed the last 100km in quite undulating terrain. Big nuts riding! In summary I had a ball, it was a new test to ride all day and most of the night, I finished with strong legs and was only suffering super cold toes and hands and needing a hot shower, beer and a snooze! Who is up next time?

The Secret Pro:

Last week’s Secret Pro was a young Jimi Hendrix,

before his guitar burning days:

And for future reference “excuse me while I kiss this guy” is a classic “mondegreen” (a word in the oxford dictionary since 2002: an attempt by the brain to make sense of missing information, especially with respect to song lyrics).

Correct entries in order received: Dave Minter and Dino Morgante
Incorrect answers(you know who you are): Gary Coleman, Michael Jackson, Muhammad Ali, Nelson Mandela, George Benson and Idi Amin.

Based on the “Need for the Bike”: Chapter 3: The Back Road
“With my head down, I absolutely insisted on picking up every eggplant and squash, reattaching every bungee cord, before limping back home to cry, finally.”

2 correct answers -> second word -> “my” -> 2 letters -> Dino is the winner.

IOU beer/coffee list: David Booth 3; Mandy Greyling 1; Brian Hornby 1; Leonie Lucas 1; Peter Jenkins 1; Dave Minter 6; Dino Morgante 2; Kym Raffelt 2; Peter Robertson 1; David Taylor 2; Wayne Williams 1; Melvyn Yap 2. You have to ride to collect.
